LINGAYEN—The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) regional office turned over P2-million, representing the first tranche of BFAR’s P4-million grant, to the provincial government in support of the latter’s “Ilog Ko, Bilayen Ko Tan Aroen Ko” environmental program.

Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. and BFAR regional director Nestor D. Domenden signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) on the use of the grant during the turnover of the fund held April 20 at the Governor’s Office at the Capitol Bldg. here.

The signing was witnessed by BFAR Executive Director Malcolm Sarmiento, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) Executive Officer Col. Paterno Orduña, and Provincial Agriculturist-OIC Dalisay Moya.

Espino said the request for funding assistance is part of the provincial government’s efforts of establishing tie-ups with various agencies to further enhance the implementation of the “Ilog Ko, Bilayen Ko Tan Aroen Ko” project.

The Governor said the second tranche of P2-million will be immediately released after liquidation of the first tranche.

SUSTAINABLE FISHING

The provincial government’s river clean-up and preservation program is aimed at helping make the country’s fishery and aquatic resources sustainable and prevent a recurrence of fish kill in the province.

Espino said the province’s rivers are now being praised for their beauty following the massive river clean-up undertaken by the Task Force Kalikasan launched through the PDRRMC last year.

Aside from the dismantling operations of the illegal structures that caused destruction of the province’s rivers, the PDRRMC has been distributing fishnets as part of the program to provide livelihood to marginalized fishermen who are now enjoying anew the bounties of the rivers.

Last month, the PDRRMC distributed fishnets to 15 barangays of Bugallon, Binmaley and Lingayen. (PIO/Angeline D. Villanueva)
