ANOTHER small town is making its mark in domestic tourism with the celebration of its first Tupig Festival last week.

Laoac, a rural town in the eastern side of Pangasinan and the youngest municipality in the province having been created only in 1980, had a unique launch of its festival on February 26 by holding it at the SM City Mall in Rosales.

“As part of our marketing strategy, we have decided to do the launch of Tupig Festival here at SM as we know we would have it big by having it here,” said Mayor Silverio Alarcio Jr.

The launch program included a presentation of the young town’s history, cultural presentations from various groups of students from schools in Laoac, a tupig-cooking demo and a grand tupig grilling, and the Bb. Laoac 2011 competition.

From February 27, the town had a full week of events including streetdancing and an “Interfaith & Harvest Festival” as a thanksgiving celebration.

Tupig is a native delicacy using glutinous rice flour, coconut, sesame seeds, and molasses, wrapped in banana leaves and cooked over live charcoal. Sold in the streets and by ambulant vendors that get on and off public buses, it is a popular pasalubong from those coming from Pangasinan.
