VARIOUS consultative meetings have been lined up in Dagupan City to discuss and strengthen multi-hazard warning systems and emergency responses against tsunamis.

Ruby Rose Policarpio, institutional development specialist of the Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems (RIMES) and Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, said that early warning systems and immediate action program will be launched in coastal barangays which are vulnerable to tsunami.

Policarpio’s office, in partnership with the city government and the Philippine Red Cross Pangasinan chapter headed by Flora Mae Magalong, is spearheading the meetings with representatives of the American Red Cross, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, City Heath Office, City Agriculture Office, City Planning and Development Office, Public Order and Safety Office and other departments to strengthen the city’s multi hazard warning systems.

The first phase of the meeting will cover the establishment of forums with mass-based organization participants, strengthen multi-hazard early warning systems; capacity building in translating hazard risk information into impacts outlook and response options for enhanced contingency planning and emergency response; and community early warning (EW) system audit toolkit to test functionality and reliability of the system.

Phase two will include the training of personnel on early warning system information interpretation, translation, communication and application; enhancement of existing Disaster Management and Community Based Disaster Risk Management training curriculum by integrating EWs training curriculum and community assistance to become hazard ready.
