BMs insist on nukes in Pangasinan

LINGAYEN–Despite the nuclear plant disaster in Fukushima, Japan as an aftermath of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that hit the country, some provincial board members are not changing their position to construct nuclear plants in the province.

Sixth District Board Member Alfonso Bince Jr. said he and Von Mark Mendoza, Angel Baniqued, Jeremy Rosario, Danilo Uy, Amadeo Espino who were all in the previous board, are standing pat on the resolution they passed last year endorsing the revival of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) and the construction of not one but three nuclear plants in Pangasinan.

Bince said the board continues to believe that nuclear energy will boost the progress and development of the province.

The board is now deliberating on passing a resolution that will call for a referendum to ask Pangasinenses whether or not they favor the construction of nuclear plants.

The Liberal Party members in the provincial board are expected to oppose that resolution in line with President Benigno Aquino III’s stance against the revival of the BNPP.

The three LP members in the board are Ranjit Shahani (6th District), Generoso Tulagan (3rd District) and Teofilo Humilde Jr. (1st District).

The resolution endorsing the BNPP revival and construction of new nuclear plants was adopted by the old provincial board in April last year, of which Bince and five of his colleagues today were part of.

The resolution was adopted following a call on them by then 5th District Rep. Mark Cojuangco, author of a bill at the House of Representatives calling for the BNPP revival.

At that time, Cojuangco pushed for the purchase and installation of three second-hand Korean nuclear reactors n Pangasinan which were up for bidding.

Cojuangco, who is no longer in an elected position, was succeeded by his wife, Kimi Coijuangco, who has re-filed the bill.

But following the incident in Japan, the Cojuangcos announced last week a time-out on their proposal until after international agencies release the final reports on what really happened at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.—LM
