UL quintet captures first game
2ND JIMMY FERNANDEZ CUP FINALS
UNIVERSITY of Luzon Junior Golden Tigers forward Paul del Moral received an in-bound pass in the last two seconds of the game and quickly released the ball for a conversion that gave his team a come-from-behind 78-76 victory over the top seed University of Eastern Pangasinan (UEP) Patriots in their first of the best-of-three championship series of the Second Jimmy Fernandez Cup held last Tuesday at DWAD gym.
The Tigers, trailing in the first three quarters, 12-15, 23-33, 52-62, and behind by as high as 16 points in the third, bounced back during the fourth and final period. Slowly and surely, they chomped the gap with Aljick Aquino and Moral at the helm before their coach Byron Vidal called a time out when the score was tied 76, with two seconds left to set up a strategy.
The line of attack paid off, bringing the crowd, which was predominantly UL students, to a boisterous roar. The UEP supporters, especially Patriots coach Renato “Jackal” Vidal, sat stunned.
According to Seato Gonimil, the league’s chief organizer, the winning shot by Moral was the first of its kind in the two-year history of the tourney.
The second game will be held on February 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the same venue.
In the battle for third place via knockout game, defending titlist PAMMA took the second runner-plum by plastering archenemy PIMSAT, 89-65.
