Gina seeks women’s, children’s desk in every village
FOURTH District Rep. Gina de Venecia has vowed to put up a Women’s and Children’s Desk in every barangay in her district similar to those she initiated in police stations.
Speaking to newsmen on Friday, De Venecia said the Women and Children Desk in every village is provided for under the Magna Carta of Women.
The special desk will help ensure the implementation of all existing laws on women and children, she added.
A seminar/training will be conducted soon for barangay officials who will serve as officer-in-charge of the desk in their respective communities.
De Venecia, then as president of the Congressional Espouses Foundation of the Philippines, was instrumental in the establishment of Women’s and Children’s Desk in every police station throughout the country in 1995.
LAWS
De Venecia, now president of the Association of Lady Legislators in Congress, said she is also working closely with the House Committee on Women to craft laws that could advance the cause of women and children and ensure their protection.
Among her initiatives today is a bill on suicide because of the alarming increase of suicide incidents throughout the country involving minors and adults.
She said the most common cause of suicide is depression, which can be adequately prevented and treated through counseling and medicines.
“I am studying the possibility of integrating the subjects of psychology or values formation to the high school curriculum so children would be taught on how to face the problems in life and avoid depression,” she said.
Earlier, De Venecia announced that she is building the Haven for Abandoned Children in Dagupan City to give a home to children abandoned by their parents.
