PANGASINAN farmers have endorsed a bill filed by Rep. Jack Enrile seeking to establish a Food Requirement Plan for Filipinos before local produce before can be considered for export.

“The feedback is good,” said Enrile who met farmers from the province and their leaders in a day-long consultation in Dagupan City on Friday, co-sponsored by the Abono partylist headed by Engr. Rosendo So.

Enrile added that the bill has also received strong endorsement in La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.

The bill, once it becomes a law, requires the Department of Agriculture to define and put together a Food Requirement Plan for the Filipino people, making them as priority consumers for the locally-produced food crops.

Enrile said in view of the looming food crisis not only in the Philippines but globally, Filipinos must move towards food sufficiency and maximize land use for more efficient production.

A stronger policy on land conversion is also needed to protect farmlands, he added.  –LM
