Boat-less maritime cops finally get own boat
LINGAYEN–How does a patrol unit pursue criminal elements if it does not have a patrol unit to its name? Hire privately-owned motorized boats.
This is the situation with the Philippine National Police Maritime Group, which is supposed to patrol and protect the environment at Lingayen Gulf. It does not have the means even to go after illegal fishers at will.
Superintendent David Martinez, regional director of the PNP Maritime Group, lamented that they have to hire motorboats from private owners whenever they need to pursue suspects who are violating fisheries and maritime laws.
But Martinez, who just assumed office recently said he is optimistic that a fast seacraft promised by the PNP national headquarters will finally be delivered to their regional headquarters in Dagupan City.
One of the most common violations around the gulf is blast fishing.
Martinez said fortunately dynamite fishing has diminished but only because current season is characterized by high waves which prevents fishermen from carrying out blast fishing. He expects the illegal activity to become rampant again once the sea calms.
With their fast craft, Martinez said his unit will be able to patrol the shoreline of the Lingayen Gulf regularly and chase and arrest blast-fishers.
He called on residents near the shore to report to his office any ongoing blast fishing activities in their areas and possibly to help identify blast fishers.–LM
