VM Belen belies Lim’s claims on budget

“WE will not stoop to his level”.

This was the sharp retort of Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, chair of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, to a statement made by Mayor Benjamin Lim accusing members of the city council of “sitting on their job” as the city budget for 2011 has yet to be passed.

Branding the mayor’s outburst as “unnecessary, uncalled for, and an act unbecoming of a public official like him”, Fernandez said she did not expect Lim to end the year 2010 on a bitter note.

“If we are, indeed, lazy as the mayor irresponsibly described members of the SP, what could have happened was we approved the budget without exercising our power of review. That’s what a lazy council would do. “ she said

“But no, we we have a responsibility to our people — that is to safeguard their money, that was why the budget remains under review and scrutiny,” she pointed out.

Her full statement is published in the full-page advertisement in this issue.
