Pogo Grande’s firecracker show draws bigger crowd
BARANGAY Pogo Grande in Dagupan City, a known top producer of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic materials has a unique tradition: every 12 noon on New Year’s Day, residents fuse together all the firecrackers unlit the previous night’s revelry for sequential explosion.
And this year, this show again attracted hundreds of spectators to watch some 100,000 pieces of firecrackers carefully strung together, lined up along the stretch from the intersection of Pogo and Lasip until the barangay hall near the main barangay bridge which is about 500 meters long.
At the strike of 12 noon, a fuse was lit and the rest went popping producing non-stop noise.
Barangay chairman George Galvan said this tradition started with just a few firecrackers and has increased through the years alongside its popularity.
He added that overseas residents even send donations for the purchase of more firecrackers for the occasion.
This year’s number of firecrackers lit reportedly cost P15,000- 18,000, much of it covered by donations.
Barangay councilor Myrna Esteves said the tradition is still anchored on the old belief that the noise will drive away the bad spirits of last year.
“Because of event’s popularity as viewed from the growing number of people who come to witness the revelry, maraming barangay na and gumaya pero siyempre, ang original ay dito sa Pogo Grande.” Esteves proudly claimed.
