MARKETS in the province have remained safe and free from the so-called ‘double-dead’ meat which have become widespread in some parts of the capital Metro Manila.

“We are lucky, hindi nakakapasok ang ‘double-dead’ na karne dito sa atin,” said Dr. Cherry Ann Javier, meat control officer for the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS), and credited the province’s meat inspection officers for their vigilance.

Javier also noted that meat supply did not prove to be a problem even during the Christmas holidays when demand usually increases.

At the same time, the NMIS officer cautioned the public against buying supposedly fresh meat that are priced lower than normal as these could be rotten and pose health risks.

Hindi porke mura ay bibilhin na natin,” Javier said.

GOAT MEAT

Meanwhile, the NMIS also issued a reminder that goat meat is required to pass through inspection procedures in slaughterhouses before being sold to the public.

Under the Meat Inspection Code, goat is listed as a food animal, along with pigs, cows and carabaos, and thus needs to be inspected by the NMIS if intended to be sold.

Javier noted that slaughtering of goats in backyards is widely practiced around the province and she stressed that it is allowed only if the meat is for personal consumption

She pointed out that slaughtering of dogs is strictly prohibited, as these are not included in the food animal list. (PIA-Pangasinan)
