THE 2-PISO QUESTION

May dalawang piso ba kayo mam?”

This question has lately become so commonplace for consumers as the country faces an apparent coin shortage in the market.

A sample scenario would be upon presenting a P100 note for your P82 bill, the ‘two pesos question’ is popped by the cashier or seller so that a crisp P20 bill instead of P18 could be given to the buyer.

And so people find themselves skimming through bags, wallets and coin purses to produce the precious coins. Lazy patrons, however, would simply say, “wala”, which then leaves the cashier with two options: bring out all the few coins in her cash register or, ask somebody else run an errand to source coins. Whichever case, these often cause delays and irritatingly long queues.

It happens in grocery stores, supermarkets, fast food chains, other diners, pharmacies, and even tricycle drivers now use the lack of coins as an excuse for not giving the correct amount of change to passengers.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said the problem would eventually be solved with the release of ample coins soon.

In the meantime, the BSP has called on the public to bring out and carry loose change when off to buy something.

Time to break those piggy banks and use those saved coins, unless you want to keep being bugged by the dalawang piso question.–(Venus H.  Sarmiento, PIA-Pangasinan)
