First sanitary landfill targets February operation
THE first and only sanitary landfill in the province is set to be inaugurated in mid February, possibly on Valentine’s Day.
“The Urdaneta sanitary landfill will be the city government’s Valentine gift to the people,” said city administrator Ramil San Juan.
The city government has invited President Benigno Aquino III to inaugurate the landfill located at Sitio Calegu Brgy Catablan.
Once operational, the city’s first customers will likely include Baguio City, Dagupan City and Mapandan who have already communicated their interest to use the facility.
San Juan, however, said no price quotation has been determined for the use of the use of the facility by others until the city government has determined its own volume of garbage that would be delivered to the facility.
The city’s 15-year old control dumpsite, also located at Brgy Catablan has existing agreements with the municipalities of Sta. Barbara and Pozorrubio.
The sanitary landfill project was initiated by former mayor Amadeo Perez Jr., now head of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) in Taiwan, with a P190 million loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines to fund the purchase of additional lots, acquisition of the right of way, and the construction of the sanitary landfill.
Last week a P2.7 million brand new compactor which will be used in the new sanitary landfill was blessed in simple ceremonies.
According to Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr , the equipment was sourced from the P3 million fund raised during the 2009 city fiesta funds. He added that the balance of the fund is being earmarked for the Urdaneta City Livelihood Training Center. –Desiree Sanchez
