DSWD cites Manay Gina for humanitarian work
FOURTH District Rep. Gina de Venecia was among the honorees during the recent 60th anniversary celebration of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for her humanitarian work when she was still a private citizen.
De Venecia was cited for pioneering charitable programs that directly help women-in-crisis, drug-dependent children, abandoned children, the elderly, and orphaned mothers.
The award was given to individuals and organizations that supported the DSWD’s humanitarian programs through the years.
The other awardees were Don Emilio Yap of the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corp, the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and the Australian Agency for International Development.
“Manay Gina” then as president of the Congressional Spouses Foundation, Inc (CSFI) built four national welfare institutions and 19 regional welfare facilities with help from her husband, former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.
These are The Haven for Women with 15 regional centers, The Haven for Children with four regional centers, The Haven for the Elderly, and the INA Healing Center.
“It has been an opportunity and a blessing for me to have been given the chance to bring change into the lives of Filipinos,” De Venecia said when she accepted her award.
“The acts that you commend me for are simply my response to opportunities that have presented themselves in the course of my life. Given the opportunity, I can do no less,” she added.
The congresswoman also helped set up in 1997 with then Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Robert Barbers the Women’s and Children’s Desk, which has now been institutionalized in every police station with a policewoman manning the help counter.
