A REFOCUSED health intervention program will be implemented in Dagupan City beginning this year to provide improved services to barangay communities in the city.

Mayor Benjamin Lim said the program, with the City Health Office (CHO) leading the implementation, will involve the deployment of more skilled health staff to the communities.

“There is a pressing need to augment our health staff by having the right workers, with the right skills, at the right places doing the right things. In this regard we will maximize our manpower resources to the barangays being the basic political unit of our society by involving two initiatives,” said Lim.

The new initiatives are the formation of Barangay Assigned Nurses (BAN) Program and the Barangay Integrated Health Care Volunteers (BIHCV).

Under the BAN Program, the city will be hiring registered nurses who will be deployed to all barangays to augment the regular health workforce of the CHO and shall serve as the primary interface and link with the community.

The number of nurses to be deployed to each barangay will depend on the population but a maximum of three nurses in a barangay.

On the other hand, the barangay volunteer workers (Barangay Health Workers, BNS and BSPO) will be integrated and unified into the BIHCV who shall undertake health, nutrition and population management activities and functions.

Under these set up, Lim said the health workers will be protected from political patronage.

Recruitment of applicants was undertaken starting January 3 and the last day of filing will be on January 11. (CIO)
