AIE 5 thwarts defending champ PAMMA
THE AIE-College Eagles, with only six of its dribblers showing up for the game, did not lose heart and went on to shock and defeat the defending champ PAMMA Sea Lions, 79-70 in the ongoing 2nd Jimmy Fernandez Cup 2011.
The Eagles scored their third win, with four losses, keeping them in contention for the second of two finals slots.
Spearheaded anew by the league’s leading scorer point-guard Jeffrey Yanes, who has been averaging 38.7 points per game, by pumping in another game high 41 points, the outnumbered Eagles mentored by Noah delo Vieres yielded the first three quarters, 19-20, 26-44, and 52-60.
They finally found their composure at the start of the fourth and final period, orchestrating a 15-0 blitz with Yanes and co-guard Amadito Perez at the controls.
This rattled the Lions for good and forced a three-way deadlock for third place together with PIMSAT.
The three squads will now have to play for victories in their last three games and wish that the UL junior Golden Tigers lose their last four games to force the use of the quotient system in case of a triple or quadruple tie.
(At press time, UL is battling PAMMA at the DWAD Gym in Dagupan).
“According to the rule, the top two teams after the second round will fight for the championship in the best-of-three-series and the third and fourth placer clash for third place via knockout game,” said Seato Gonimil, the league’s project director.
But in case of a double tie, a win-over-the-other system will be implemented. In case of a triple or quadruple tie, which is unlikely, the FIBA quotient method will be enforced.
Games on Monday will be PIMSAT versus UPang-PHINMA at 1:00 pm. while UEP tangles with UL at 2:30 p.m.–JAGJr.
