TWO suspected members of a guns-for-hire syndicate riding in tandem on motorcycles were killed in a shootout with elements of the Regional Highway Patrol Team (RHPT) late evening along the highway in Barangay Bonuan Binloc, Dagupan.

The fatalities were identified as Alexander Liwanag and Daniel Santos, both of Querino Street in Tondo, Manila who were on board a motorcycle without a plate number.

Elements of the RHPT signalled on the duo to stop for an identity check but the suspects responded by shooting at the lawmen, hitting the blinker and left-side mirror of the Izuzu pick-up mobile patrol car, prompting the latter to retaliate.

The running gun-battle between the lawmen and the suspects took place long the highway in front of a posh subdivision where a meeting of municipal mayors was taking place.

The police speculate that the suspects could have been targeting a municipal mayor who was in that meeting. Investigation on the incident is ongoing.

Superintendent Romeo Caramat, chief of police of Dagupan, said all indications point to the suspects as guns-for-hire as they were in possession of one Caliber 45 pistol marked AutoOrdnance Corp, a Cal. 45 automatic pistol with magazines loaded with three ammunitions, one spare magazine, one silencer and two face masks colored gray and black.

Aside from the sophisticated firearms, the suspects also had with them a map of Dagupan and Luzon.

Initial investigation showed that the suspects, who were on the northbound side of the highway, were already being chased by elements of the Police Community Precinct VI in Tondaligan Park while elements of the RHPT were headed in the opposite direction.
