EARNING money from garbage is easy as students from the University of Luzon have recently shown.

Dr. Macarthur Samson, UL president, said sales receipts from the university-wide plastic bottle collection campaign, dubbed as “Scraps for a Cause”, have now reached P100,000 over the last two years.

“Managing and selling plastic bottles is not just about the money, it is also about the environment. When our students collect plastic bottles and place them in UL’s recycling bank, not only are we earning money but we are taking part in the global campaign to save our environment,” Samson said.

Dr. Carmelo John Vidal, program coordinator for UL’s National Service Training Program (NSTP), said millions of plastic bottles are produced each year, mostly for beverages, and two-thirds of them end up in landfills.

Vidal said the plastic bottle collective drive has dramatically raised the awareness of the university community to segregate and recycle garbage and help in putting a stop to the 30-year garbage problem the country is facing and at the same time, earn from it.

He said revenues generated from the drive are used to finance UL’s livelihood activities and community extension efforts for residents of Doña Josefa Samson – Gawad Kalinga Bangusville in Bonuan.
