Coffin on display warns drug pushers

UMINGAN–Death to drug pushers!

This is the strong warning sent out by one barangay in this town by displaying a coffin right at the entrance to the village.

Prominently displayed on the side of the national highway, the coffin is hard to miss and motorists passing through coming from and going to the Umingan town proper have been intrigued by it.

Upon closer inspection, a poster beside the casket reads:  “Sino sa inyo mga pasaway na pusher ang gustong unang mahiga rito?” (Who among you incorrigible drug pushers would like to be the first to be laid down here?)

Barangay Chairman Jay Hernandez, who put up the coffin, said this is not an act of bravado but a way of sending out his serious warning against drug pushers who intend to sell their goods to his community.

Re-elected for a third and last term of office, Hernandez has been known for his efforts to make San Leon as a drug-free barangay.

Hernandez borrowed the empty coffin from LVL Funeral Home as part of his campaign.

Residents of San Leon admit there are illegal drug pushers and users in their village but said they are strongly behind their barangay captain in making San Leon drug-free and welcome the coffin in the propaganda war against the menace.

At the same time, the community believes the barangay kapitan respects the law and will not resort to human rights violations against suspected drug pushers.

Marijuana abuse is reportedly more widespread in San Leon than the use of shabu.–LM
