THE University of Luzon Golden Tigers, newly-crowned 2010 PRISAA-UCAAP Inter-Collegiate Basketball champions, will represent Pangasinan in this year’s Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) North-Central Luzon tilt to be held on October 15-18 at the UNP gym in Vigan City.

Seato Gonimil, UCAAP executive director, said the Golden Tigers of Dagupan City Councilor Chito Samson are expected to face stiff competition from the defending champion Lyceum of Subic, Cordillera region titlist University of Baguio, and Ilocos titleholder University of Northern Philippines based in Vigan.

Gonimil, also the sports director of UL, said the four-day, four-team cagefest will be on a single round-robin system and the champion will be sent to Manila to represent north and central Luzon area for the ‘zonal’ games to be held next month.

“Hopefully UL will pass the Vigan City test that will pave the way for it for the Manila stint,” said Gonimil.

“And if UL is lucky to win in Manila, then UL will be included in the PCCL’s ‘sweet 16’ for the final phase that will comprise the powerhouse teams of Ateneo, FEU, La Salle, San Sebastian to name a few plus the champions from Visayas and Mindanao,” he added.

The cagefest will be under the auspices of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), the national governing body of amateur basketball.–JAG, Jr.
