Text scare hits La Union too

SAN FERNANDO CITY— Pranksters had a field day scaring an already battered public in Pangasinan and in La Union at the height of the Typhoon Juan.

Unidentified unscrupulous persons sowed panic in neighboring La Union by spreading text messages that warned of tsunami hitting the shores of La Union soon as Typhoon ‘Juan” exits.

The Office of Civil Defense regional office promptly called radio stations to clarify that the text message was a hoax.

It was a storm surge, not tsunami, that hit the shores of La Union, Pangasinan and Ilocos Sur but the swelling of the beach water was enough to send residents in coastal areas to evacuate to higher grounds.

On Friday afternoon, OCD reported that except for Pangasinan which continued to experience occasional rainshowers, all parts of the Ilocos region recorded fair weather condition.

At the same time, the power in Pangasinan, La Union and Ilocos Sur was restored 100 per cent as of 2:00 p.m. of Friday but power interruptions still continue in Adams town and some portions of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte.
