ROSALES–Victims of the super typhoon Pepeng that ravaged Pangasinan on Oct. 8 last year, particularly from this town which was among the hardest hit, will get their “transitional shelters” from the International Federation of Red Cross in November.

Florame Magalong, chapter administrator of Red Cross in Pangasinan, said 101 units of houses would be turned over to homeless families whose houses were completely washed away by rampaging floodwaters due to heavy rains from the typhoon and the sudden water release from the San Roque Dam in San Manuel town.

The Transitional Shelter project is located in Barangay Balincanaway, built on a two-hectare lot provided by the local government unit led by Mayor Ricardo Revita.

The beneficiaries, who contributed labor for the construction of the houses, were also given livelihood opportunities and some cash by the Red Cross.

Last week, Selvaratnam Senadurai, country head of the International Federation of Red Cross, was accompanied by Magalong to the relocation site here.

So far, 34 housing units have been completed and Phase 2 of the project is now under construction. A total of 70 houses will be built.

Meanwhile, Magalong said some families in Bayambang and Dagupan City will also be given their transitional shelters in the succeeding weeks.

Twenty-one housing units were built in Buenlag I and in Tamaro, Bayambang and 29 units in sitio Korea, Bonuan Binloc, Dagupan City.

All the relocation sites had clearances from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau that identified disaster risk concerns.

Red Cross undertook the evaluation and revalidation of the recipients.

Magalong reported that Red Cross also provided comfort rooms and latrines to 13 schools in different towns/cities in Pangasinan that were worst hit by Pepeng under their water and sanitation school project.#
