Madavfe opposes planned night market

STALLHOLDERS at the Malimgas Market are vigorously opposing a plan of the Dagupan City government to again stage a Night Market or Baratillo in the streets near the public market during the 15-day city fiesta celebration in December.

This was gleaned in a resolution of the Malimgas Dagupan Vendors Federation (Madavfe) passed by its board of directors last October 16, a copy of which was sent to the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

Madavfe believes the planned night market will deprive stallholders of potential sales and will unduly compete with their products even as they pay their rentals, obligations and other forms of fees to the city government.

The resolution, signed by 12 members of the board of directors, stated that another Baratillo in the city will also result in the proliferation of vendors in the city’s streets and other thoroughfares that will ultimately result in clogging of sidewalks and worsen littering in the streets.

Madavfe asked the SP to stop the staging of the Baratillo to protect the market stallholders who are religiously paying their rentals and fees to the city government.

They said the night market vendors sell their items on retail basis directly competing with their goods inside the market’s stalls.

The stallholders warned that the night market will again create chaos in the city’s already problematic traffic situation since streets will be taken over by vendors and pedestrians. #
