Dagupena is Asia-Pacific Sudoku grand champion anew
A fourth-year high school student at Pangasinan Universal Institute in Dagupan City bested 50 professionals and students from Singapore, China, Thailand, Indonesia, India and Malaysia to win again as grand champion in the BRAND’S Asia Pacific Sudoku Challenge 2010 held in Singapore on October 17, 2010.

Sarah Jane Cua, 16, surprised the judges and stunned spectators at Suntec City Mall in Singapore when she finished the final Sudoku puzzle ahead of the older finalists to win first place.
She won the cash prize of 10,000 Singapore dollars, S$300 BRAND’S Hamper, glass trophy and certificate. She will also get a one-year supply of BRAND’S Essence of Chicken.
The second and third places went to participants from Malaysia and Singapore.
The other Filipino participant, Timothy James Tan of Trinity Christian School in Bacolod City, placed as one of the top 15 finalists in the semi-finals.
“Napakasaya ko po,” Sarah Jane said after winning the Sudoku contest.
Cua, trained by the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG), said she was nervous while doing the final Sudoku puzzle but care, precision and organized strategy helped her win the contest.
In 2008, Cua represented the Philippines in the BRAND’S Sudoku Challenge 2008 Asia Pacific Open in Singapore where she was declared champion for the first time.
Cua was also the winner for two consecutive years in 2009 and 2010 in the Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge, the competition that gave her the opportunity to represent the Philippines in Sudoku contests in Thailand and the United States.
The Asia Pacific Sudoku Challenge 2010 was a competition open only to top three winners of national level Sudoku competitions or have been nominated by their country’s Sudoku association as the country’s representatives.
