Additional Christmas bonus for teachers proposed

A RESOLUTION calling for an increased Christmas bonus for public school teachers in Dagupan City was proposed last week, coinciding with the celebration of World Teachers’ Day on October 5.

Councilor Jeslito Seen, the resolution’s author, urged Mayor Benjamin Lim to include the additional benefit in the city’s 2011 budget, which is currently being drafted.

Seen said teachers deserve it citing the sacrifices that their job entails as well as the performance of additional duties such as during elections.

In another resolution, Seen also sought an increase in the monthly allowance of day care teachers.

The resolutions have been referred to the committees of finance and education.

OTHER ‘HEROES’

However, another councilor, has cautioned against Seen’s proposal saying this may give undue advantage to the teachers and set a precedent for other sectors to demand the same.

Councilor Jesus Canto said, “Who can prevent other sectors like the members of POSO (Public Order and Safety Office) and the health workers from asking the same benefits?’”

“All of them are heroes to me,” he added.

The proposed budget prepared by the city administration will be subject to the city council’s review and approval but the council does not have the authority to increase it nor insert additional items.

Meanwhile, Seen has also urged business establishments to give special discounts to public and private school teachers from the city.
