928 bets for barangay polls, 694 for SK polls
THE race is on!
Nine-hundred-twenty-eight candidates registered for the barangay election and another 694 for the Sangguniang Kabataan elections in 31 barangays of Dagupan as of midnight on October 13, the deadline for the filing of certificates of candidacy.
City Elections Officer Remarque Ravanzo said the 928 who registered for the barangay polls include candidates for punong barangay and seven kagawad; while the 694 are for Sk chairman and seven kagawad.
The prospective chairman of the Liga ng Barangay and the SK Federation chairman will be elected among the winning barangay chairmen and the SK chairmen respectively, and the two will be appointed ex-officio members of the city council.
Ravanzo said the campaign period will end midnight of October 23. .
He also said although the city of Dagupan was placed in the watch list of the police, violence, however, is not anticipated, as the candidates know each other personally in their respective communities.
In an interview, Ravanzo confirmed that the main reason why Dagupan was placed under the watchlist was because of the incident in Barangay Bolosan two days before the election where men of rival candidates nearly figured in a clash.
Being in the watch list is actually a boon not bane because the PNP will send augmentation force to Dagupan to help the local police maintain peace and order during the polls, Ravanzo stressed.
A peace covenant will be signed in every barangay with the help of the pastoral councils after the scheduled candidates’ forum all the barangays.
OIC Chief of Police Superintendent Caramat is planning to conduct a separate peace covenant among all the candidates to underscore the role of the candidates in keeping peace for the duration of the campaign and on election day.
Observers, however, fear that violence may break out among supporters when they begin heckling each other in a bid to win votes.
Ravanzo had conferred with the City Schools Division to reassign teachers who will be members of the Board of Election Tellers to other barangays if they have relatives running in their respective barangays to ensure impartiality in the counting and canvassing of votes. #.
