LESSONS ON REPRODUCTION

TAYUG–A class assignment given to students at the Tayug National High School by a teacher has caused uproar among parents.

Arnold Hernandez, a teacher for MAPE (Music and Arts, Physical Education and Hygiene), asked his students to bring to class samples of condoms and contraceptive pills as part of their lessons in reproduction.

The condoms were supposed to be brought by the boys and the pills, the girls.

The students, naturally, asked their parents to help them procure the items.

The parents, in turn, were appalled and went to confront Hernandez and the school principal, Lynne Bautista.

Bautista confirmed that Hernandez did give the assignment as part of the lesson on reproduction, but said he did not consult her about this prior to doing so.

Bautista acknowledged that such an assignment could offend the sensitivities of students and parents.

Hernandez has apologized to the parents, saying he intended no malice.

The parents have accepted the teacher’s apology.—LM
