OFW flees from abusive Saudi Arabia employer

ALAMINOS CITY–A frightened 27-year old female Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) was recently repatriated from Saudi Arabia with the help of Mayor Hernani Braganza and now contemplates fighting back.

Cherry Ann Ferrer, a resident of Barangay Poblacion here who arrived from Saudi Arabia on September 6, will consider the mayor’s advice to file a complaint against the recruiting agency before the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA) and the court.

Ferrer left the country last July 28, supposedly to be employed as a caregiver in Saudi Arabia.

But Ferrer said in her more than one month of stay there, she ended up working as a domestic helper under an abusive employer who oftentimes made sexual advances on her.

Terrified, she secretly contacted her parents in Alaminos who, in turn, quickly asked help from Braganza for their daughter’s immediate repatriation.

Braganza, who had previously helped many OFWs in distress, requested the DFA for help.

The mayor thanked the DFA and Ambassador Antonio Ambassador Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for their prompt action on his appeal.

Ferrer said the ambassador personally phoned and asked her about her location so that she could be fetched.

When she was finally located, it was found out that her employer gave her a fake passport.

At the same time, the agency that recruited her demanded a huge sum supposedly for her airfare and placement fee as a pre-condition for releasing her.

Ferrer’s parents gave in to the agency’s demands and through the intercession of the Philippine embassy in Saudi, her real passport was returned to her. -LM
