More dengue cases being reported
DENGUE cases in Pangasinan are still rising, contrary to prediction it will decline during the remaining months of the year.
Dr. Michael Canto, spokesperson of the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC), said in the first week of September alone, they registered more than 40 confirmed cases of dengue.
This is quite unusual, he said, because statistics of cases in the last three years showed that the number of dengue cases usually start to decline starting during the month of September.
As such, Canto advised Pangasinenses not to relax their guard against dengue just yet as the disease is still on an uptrend, not only in the province but in many other parts of the country.
The number of cases in the province peaked in August when R1MC admitted 189 patients, 155 of whom were children and 34 were adults.
Hospital records show that dengue patients from September 1 to 7 came from Dagupan City, 19; Mangaldan, 6; San Fabian, 6; Manaoag, 4; Calasiao, 3; Urbiztondo, 3; Sta. Barbara, 3; Pozorrubio, 2; Mangatarem, 2; Bugallon, 1; and Alcala 1.
Canto noted that the 19 confirmed recorded cases in Dagupan during the first week of September is still high considering that a total of 28 cases were recorded in the whole month of August.

Canto called on local government units to continue to spearhead a “total war” against dengue by getting rid of all the breeding places of mosquitoes.
At the same time, he appealed to people suffering from high fever, one obvious symptom of dengue, to immediately seek medical help so that the dengue virus can be detected at an early stage.
He also asked the public, especially those in the rural areas, not to rely merely on a herbal plant called “tawa-tawa“, which is reportedly being used as an alternative cure for dengue.
Canto said there is still no scientific evidence that “tawa-tawa” can indeed cure dengue.–LM
