Restoration of 2 flood control projects sought

LEADERS of the 6th District are set to lobby for the restoration of two vital flood control projects, which the Aquino administration is set to scrap after classifying these as among the “midnight deals” of the past administration.

The two projects are in Sitio Bato, San Vicente in San Manuel town worth P228.7 million, which was reportedly awarded to contractor Northern Builders, and the other in Barangay Bantog in Asingan, won by Tokwin Construction.

Board Member Ranjit Shahani, however, said he has yet to confirm whether the two projects, both part of the Agno River Flood Control system, have already been started.

He said it was his uncle, former President Fidel Ramos, who brought the matter to his attention and called on him to organize the district leaders for a concerted effort to get the projects reconsidered.

Shahani said he will visit DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson soon to ask for the restoration of the two projects, which are designed to control flooding in San Manuel and Asingan, the hometown of Ramos.

Mayor Virgilio Marcelo of San Manuel and Mayor Heidi Chua of Asingan, said they will join the lobby efforts to protect their respective towns.

Shahani said he will also ask Singson and Director Philip Menez of the DPWH Flood Control Division to extend the term of Director Fidel Ginez as chief of the Agno Flood Control Office (AFCO), to see the projects through.

Ginez, who is from Asingan and Villasis towns, has expressed intent to retire in October this year.—LM
