LNU beats UL in overtime, UPang crushes PAMMA
2010 PRISAA-UCAAP
AFTER suffering a stunning defeat in the hands of unheralded team Colegio de Dagupan (CdD) Blue Stallions in their second game for the 2010 PRISAA-UCAAP Basketball Championship, the defending champion Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) Dukes were back in winning form last week after they defeated their arch enemy University of Luzon (UL) Golden Tigers.
The Dukes played intelligently last Monday, scoring a come from behind 88-83 overtime victory over the Golden Tigers.
The Dukes were behind much of the way, especially in the third quarter, 62-51, and appeared to be on the verge of another defeat with a slow start in the fourth period, trailing by as much as 13 points at 66-53.
But after calling for a timeout, the LNU team came back with a vengeance by engineering an 18-6 binge led by its reliable players Benjie Labitoria and Michael Indoy, combining 16 points, then trailed by just a point, 73-72, with 33 seconds left.
The Tigers misfired on their next opportunity, then the Dukes got the ball, but point guard Labitoria fumbled on his way to the basket and Tigers power forward Harold Deocares was fouled after receiving a pass, 10 ticks remaining.
Deocares missed the first but converted his second free throw to lead by two points, 74-72.
On the inbound throw by the Dukes, with barely four seconds to go, a trapped Indoy pitched a pass to a cutting Lionel Manalo in the shaded area, who in turn tossed a ‘Hail Mary shot’ using the board that went to tie the score, 74-74.
In the five-minute overtime period, the Tigers committed three passing errors that made the big difference in the match, and Labitoria and Manalo took the helm.
Labitoria and Indoy banged in a game high 22 points each, including two treys apiece. Antonio Mejia contributed 13 and Manalo added 10.
For the Tigers, Deocares scored a team high 17 points, Jonathan Panunciar had 15, and Ramil Baniqued and John Larry Balmes contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.
