Lim eyes Urdaneta to help solve Dagupan’s garbage woes

DAGUPAN City is looking at the sanitary landfill of Urdaneta City as a possible option to ease its worsening garbage problem.

Mayor Benjamin Lim, in a talk with newsmen, said first he will have to find out the rate per ton of garbage which Urdaneta will be charging other local government units (LGUs) for the use of the sanitary landfill, the only one of its kind so far in Pangasinan.

The sanitary landfill, being built at a cost of P193 million, is expected to be operational by October this year and will be later opened to neighboring LGUs at a cost.

The open dumpsite in Dagupan is now at a critical level and the longstanding garbage problem in the city has been worsening.

Lim said the precarious situation is partly due to the city government’s inability to move the garbage at the dumpsite because the bulldozer bought by the past administration for P7 million conked out after just three weeks of use.

Also, only one of the two forklifts of the city is still functioning.

SEGREGATION

Earlier, Lim met with barangay chairmen and ordered them to strictly enforce the policy of segregation at source.

The come-backing mayor cited that during his previous term, the city administration succeeded in implementing segregation at the household level to reduce the waste being brought to the dumpsite at only 40 per cent.

Lim noted that segregation was not strictly implemented by the preceding administration that was in charge for the last three years.

He noted that so far they are 70 percent successful in enforcing the renewed segregation order.

AWAI LAND

Meanwhile, Lim noticeably did not mention the 30-hectare property bought by the city under his previous administration in Awai, San Jacinto for P16 million.

The property was envisioned by Lim as a site of Dagupan’s sanitary landfill.

However, the Awai land was lost by the city government when the Department of Agrarian Reform decided in favor of the tenants who claimed ownership of the land before the city acquired it. This was determined by the previous city administration when it attempted to.
