Massive river clean-up kicks off

LINGAYEN–The river that loops through Dagupan, Binmaley and Lingayen is finally getting its long overdue clean up.

The drive was formally launched in front of the provincial capitol through the signing of a memorandum of agreement among Governor Amado Espino Jr., who provided the muscle for the initiative, Lingayen Mayor Ernesto Castaneda, Binmaley Mayor Lorenzo Cerezo and Dagupan Mayor Benjamin Lim, represented by his son Councilor Marc Brian Lim.

San Carlos City Mayor Julier Resuello also joined the drive, saying there is also a need to clean the rivers in his city.

The clean-up drive fired off last July 19 with the support of the Philippine National Police, officials and employees of the provincial government, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) and several other agencies as part of the activities for the National Disaster Consciousness Week.

The launching was attended by Police Provincial Director Percival Barba, PENRO Officer Leduina Co and other officials of the provincial government.

FISHPENS

The provincial government intends to dredge the river through Lingayen, Binmaley and Dagupan City, using a brand new dredging machine it recently bought.

The provincial and local governments have acknowledged that the dredging will make the water turbid, thus affecting bangus being raised in fishpens and force operators to harvest prematurely, but the activity has been set as a priority.

Stressing the need for the rivers to be cleaned, Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan said this activity should actually be undertaken not just during National Disaster Consciousness Week but as often as possible to help avoid flooding.

Baraan also rallied other LGUs to spearhead the cleaning of their respective rivers, especially in anticipation of typhoons and possible flooding during this rainy season.–LM
