Bani builds model shelter project

BANI–The Borobor Ti Ayat (Spring of Love), a housing project in this coastal town for victims of typhoon “Emong” in 2008, is positioning to be a model in this calamity-prone country.

Engineer Virgilio Cave said the entire housing area and the houses were specifically designed to withstand landslides and strong winds brought by typhoons.

Cave explained that the ladder-like structure on which the houses are positioned, inspired by the Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao, was conceptualized primarily to prevent landslide.

Huge corals were cemented together to finish the beach look of the slopes leading to the houses.

The 4×5 square- meter houses, meanwhile, have “kwatro aguas” roofing, specifically designed to withstand strong winds.

The project, with 100 identical core shelter houses located in barangay Dacap Sur, is expected to be completed this week.

Mayor Marcelo Navarro said the community can eventually be transformed into an “eco- village” that can be replicated.

The community will also have its own plaza and livelihood projects will be developed for the residents.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) sponsored the project, with counterpart contribution from the municipal government and assistance from the World Food Organization (WFO).

The DSWD allocated P7 million for the materials to be used to build the units costing P70,000 each.

The local government’s P8 million package counterpart consists of the 50 hectare lot, architects and engineers, pipelines for the water subsystem and electricity and waste disposal facilities.

The WFO donated 4,200 sacks of rice worth about P5 million, which were used as payment for the 100 housing beneficiaries who contributed labor in the construction.

The project’s inauguration is tentatively scheduled on September 28 and President Benigno Aquino III has been invited to formally make the turnover.

“Hopefully, he (the President) can come,” Navarro said.
