AMA Manila, CdD overwhelm UL teams in goodwill games
AMA Computer of Manila, shaking off a sluggish start in the first two quarters, pulled off a convincing 85-73 finish against the University of Luzon Golden Tigers in ‘goodwill games’ held on July 6 at the Dagupan People’s Astrodome.
The visiting Manileños, also known as “Titans” who were the national champion of the 2006 NAASCU (National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities) Games, trailed at the beginning but later called a timeout and contrived a 23-4 romp with its import six-foot-five Aziz Imbumico doing most of the damage to wrest the lead, 67-53, at the third quarter.
The Tigers, inspired by the cheers of the home crowd, countered and orchestrated a 16-5 binge to the delight of the spectators with power-forward Ramil Baniqued banking on clutch hits that shook the visitors and trimmed the Manileños lead to six, 72-66, forcing the Titans to call another timeout, with two minutes and nine seconds left.
The timeout paid off with center-forward Pablo dela Rosa and off-guard Glenn Regala sealing off the Titans’ victory.
“We can’t seem to find the consistency and the killer instinct to blow away an opposition. They gave us a good fight and this is a learning experience,” said Titans head coach Jun Golosinda.
For his part, Tigers head coach Renato ‘Jack’ Vidal said, “With my top three players Marbin Macalalad, Willy Caiña and Norman Ilao graduated from the school, my team is still raw in this magnitude of a game. But we have a lot of room for improvement.”
Six of the Titans’ players scored in double-digit figures with Dela Rosa top scoring the game at 15 points. Mark Mangalindan contributed 13 while Francisco Ebidad, Romnick Narag, Imbumico and Regala had 10 points apiece.
On the losing side, Jonathan Fanunciar and Baniqued had a team-high 12 points each. Harold Deocares contributed 11.
CdD vs. UL-Team B
In the first game, Colegio de Dagupan (CdD) Team A proved that it is the team to reckon with in the coming PRISAA-UCAAP Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championship ready to start on July 22 by routing the University of Luzon Team B, 82-62.
The UL boys of head coach Byron Vidal, leading by 10 points in the first quarter, 23-13, were unable to protect their lead. They trailed in the second and third quarters, 33-42 and 48-59, and never caught up with their rivals up to the final buzzer.–JAGJr.
