LINGAYEN— The provincial government led a multi-sectoral massive mangrove tree planting along the coast of Barangay Dolaoan in Anda last June 24 as one of the highlights of the World Environment Month celebration.

Around 200 participants, covering an area of 1.3 hectares, joined in the activity dubbed “Alay Tanim mula kay Governor Espino.”

Some 5,000 seedlings of assorted species of mangrove were planted, sourced from the province-owned Mangrove Information Center and Nursery in Arnedo, Bolinao.

Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay Moya stressed that mangrove reforestation is important to protect and maintain the natural habitat and breeding grounds for fish and as a natural barrier during typhoon or storm surges.

Barangay Dolaoan is one of the 16 coastal barangays of Anda that is naturally grown with mangrove stands.

Among the participants were the Philippine Guardians Brotherhood, Inc.- Dagupan Chapter, Pangasinan Federation of NGOs, and Samahang Multi-sectoral ng Dolaoan; the LGU of Anda (represented by the Social Welfare and Development Office, Agriculturist Office, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council), Dolaoan Barangay Council, Grade Six students of the Dolaoan Elementary School and various religious groups.

Mangrove planting is a regular activity under the province’s coastal resource management program.
