WHILE the Alaminos City government has started to acquire land for the site of the planned international airport in barangay Sabangan, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) local office is also now busy preparing the access road which is seen to cost P60 million.

District Engineer Edgardo Paragas, head of the first Pangasinan engineering district, said his office is now conducting a survey as well as talks with landowners to be affected.

For the right-of-way acquisition, an estimated P10 million is needed.

The national government has earlier released P21 million for the road project, which will be five kilometers long and 30 meters wide connecting with the Alaminos-Sual national highway.

Paragas said about P10 million to P12 million is needed per kilometer for the construction of a new road and the ongoing survey will determine the amount needed to complete it.

The airport project for this home city of the Hundred Islands National Park was first announced by President Macapagal-Arroryo in 2007 during her State-of the Nation Address.

Paragas said he hopes that the incoming Aquino administration will also give priority to the airport considering its impact on the development of Pangasinan.
