VM Fernandez says she is not resigning

“I WILL stay.”

Re-elected Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez has reiterated that she has no intention of resigning from her post despite the loss of her running-mate Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. in the last election to come-backing Mayor Benjamin Lim.

Lim and the vice mayor are business rivals in the shopping mall and retail sectors in Pangasinan and other parts of northern Luzon.

Almost immediately after the proclamation of winners for the May 10 election, text messages circulated saying that Fernandez is resigning as vice mayor, as she will not be able to work with Lim.

“It’s a sick joke,” said Fernandez of the text messages.

In a talk to city employees during last Monday’s flag-raising ceremony at the city plaza, Fernandez said the text messages persist even after she already made public that she will stay and serve the new mandate from the people of Dagupan City.

“I repeat, I am not resigning as I cannot turn my back on the people who re-elected me to this position and gave me a resounding vote of confidence,” she said.

Fernandez said the text message is a “demolition job” against her, intended to weaken the vote of confidence given her by a great majority of the voters.

“How can I turn my back on the almost 80 per cent of the electorate in Dagupan?” Fernandez told employees.—LM
