Typhoon Emong victims get new homes finally
BANI–A new village, called Burobor ti Ayat (Fountain of Love), will soon be completed in the foothills of Barangay Dacap Sur here for 35 families affected by typhoon “Emong” which hit on May 7 last year and those residing in the town’s identified danger zones.
Construction for the 100 units of detached houses, each with a floor area of 64 square meters, is expected to be completed by the end of June.
Mayor Marcelo Navarro Jr. said those affected by the typhoon are currently still staying in tents provided by the Rotary Club of United Kingdom, assisted by the Rotary Clubs of New Zealand, Australia and Makati.
In three weeks time, some of the families can start moving into their new homes being constructed on a self-help basis under the supervision of their own Neighborhood Association for Shelter Assistance (NASA).
NASA president Diomedes Napura said there are 400 people working in the project site, 70 of whom are women.
Those working at the site do not get cash compensation but are instead given 7.5 kilos of rice daily for ordinary workers while skilled workers get 10 kilos.
The rice came from the United Nations World Food Program, coursed through the municipal government.
The whole village, with a total land area of five hectares, is about 12 kilometers away from the town proper of Bani and overlooking the scenic Ulanen Beach.
The shelter project started in February this year, using the P7 million financial assistance from the Core Shelter Program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
Navarro said he is inviting President-apparent Benigno Aquino III to inaugurate the new village, which he describes as a pro-poor project that serves as a model of cooperation between the people and the government.—LM
