Olay tops Pista’y Dayat chessfest
LINGAYEN–National Master Edgar Reggie Olay halved a point in his last match to tally 6.5 points out of a possible seven to capture top honor in the 2010 Pista’y Dayat Open Chess Tournament held at the Provincial Library here.
Olay, who came all the way from Cotabato, entered the last round a full point ahead with six wins out of six games, including a big win over International Master and top seed Oliver Barbosa in the penultimate round encounter and needed only a draw to bag the championship.
He did just that as he cruised to a draw at the top board with Roderick Nava to romp off with the first prize trophy and P10,000 cash.
Nava emerged in second place with his 6 points, good for the runner-up trophy and P7,000 cash prize.
Placing 3rd to 9th places were Allan Macala, Barbosa, Ronald Llavanes, Vicneil Villanueva, Prince Mark Aquino, John Ravel Morazo and Edagar Tullao, who all scored 5.5 points.
Meanwhile, Romy Fagon of Urdaneta smothered the opposition in the kiddies category by scoring 6.5 points while Ramil Rabanera and Fernando Mendoza shared 2nd to 3rd places with identical 5.5 points.
The Top Senior Award went to Jimmy Austria while Aquino emerged as Top Junior player. Kristine Joy Manganid bagged the Top Lady Award.
Aquino of San Nicolas, Tullao of Tayug and Verth Alora shared the Top Pangasinense Award and went home with a medal and P1,000 cash prize each.
Asia’s first International Master and Pangasinan’s pride Rodolfo Tan Cardozo was guest of honor and conducted chess clinic before the start of the chess fest.
“We should train and encourage local chess players and give incentives, especially to the young aspirants so that Pangasinan will be able to produce future international masters,” Cardoso said.
Haridas Pascua, FIDE Master from Mangatarem and Samantha Glo Revita, a 10-year-old chess prodigy from Rosales who joined the tournament in preparation for the National Age Group Chess Championship in Davao next month, thanked Governor Amado Espino, Jr. for his support for young chess players.
A total of 131 chess players took part in the tournament officiated by arbiters from the National Chess Arbiters Association of the Philippines.
The tournament was organized by the Provincial Government and the Pangasinan Chess Federation.
