Obosa captures 3rd Noynoy bikathon
MANAOAG’S Ericson Obosa, an internationally-experienced rider, defied the scorching heat and cut loose from his four breakaway companions in the last 200 meters to capture the 215-kilometer “3rd OO Na, Noynoy Na Pista’y Dayat bikefest” held May 1.
Obosa, 29, fresh from his stint last month in the Tour of Thailand, outpedalled three riders from Guimba, Nueva Ecija after the first climb at Suasalito point won by 2009 Padyak Pinoy champ Joel Calderon.
Obosa then used his global skill by change-pacing only occasionally and eventually clocked the total race distance in five hours, six minutes and 48 seconds to bag the P20,000 top prize.
Calderon’s town mate, unheralded Nicanor Guanzon, finished second, three-bike lengths behind, to pocket P15,000. Calderon landed third worth P10,300 while Sual bet Mark Julius Bonzo, who suffered a spill 700 meters away at the first of two elbow-shaped curves, checked in fourth to earn P7,500. Fifth was Pepito Calosa of San Jacinto worth P5,000.
Race favorite Oscar Rendole, the winner of the race’s second edition held April 11, suffered an untimely flat tire two kilometers within the outskirt of Mabini town. With his team vehicle no where in sight, Rendole, also from Guimba abandoned the race and received P1,000 from the organizers headed by Jun Omar Ebdane, chairman of the sponsoring Asahan Mo party-list.
Composing the top ten were: Emilito Atilano of Basista, P4,000; Ariel Flores of Mangaldan, P3,000; Rustom Lim of Olongapo City, P2,000; Baler Ravina of Asingan, P1,500 and Reginaldo Calosa of San Jacinto, P1,200.
Obosa, Calderon, Rendole, Bonzo, Atilano and Ravina are all members of the Philippine national senior team that will compete on coming Asian Games at Guangzhou, China while Lim, 17, is a member of RP’s national junior squad.–JAGJr.
