New tag for food supplements

SOON, the familiar “No Approved Therapeutic Claim” found in food supplements and vitamins will no longer be seen nor heard.

The Department of Health (DOH) has directed all manufacturers of food/dietary supplements to stop using the tag, which has been subject to manipulation and confuses the public.

More often, the phrase is being abused by the owners of such food/dietary supplements and/or their advertisers or agents, the DOH said.

All food/dietary supplement owners, manufacturers, distributors, importers, advertisers and/or their agents are instead now mandated to strictly carry, in Filipino, the standard message or phrase: “Mahalagang Paalala: Ang (Name of Product) ay Hindi Gamot at Hindi Dapat Gamiting Panggamot sa Anumang Uri ng Sakit.”

This applies to all advertisement, promotion and/or sponsorship activities or materials.

The directive is contained in DOH Administrative Order No. 2008-0008 on the subject: Directive specific to the Change in the Use of the “No Approved Therapeutic Claim…”

Further, the DOH is looking into the growing concern raised by consumers on food/dietary supplements with dubious, inaccurate, false, deceptive or misleading claims about their efficacy and/or nutritional, medicinal or health-enhancing benefits.
