STA. BARBARA–Re-electionist Mayor Reynaldo Velasco, who was supported by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) in the 2007 election, is unperturbed by the influential group’s decision not to endorse him in this year’s poll.

“Let the majority of the people of Sta. Barbara speak up and be counted to push for meaningful reforms, progress and development based on my administrations track record of service for the last three years,” Velasco said.

In a news conference on Thursday, Velasco said he respects the INC leaders’ decision and thanked them for the previous support from the group, which votes as a block.

“As a military and police officer for 38 years, I have faced tougher battles that involved the very lives of men in uniform and those on the other side of the fence. I have survived all those challenges and have come out victorious in the end,” he said.

Velasco expressed confidence that he and his Team Victorey “will emerge victorious with the blessings of the Almighty and the well-informed citizenry of Sta. Barbara”.

from the people of Sta. Barbara for a fresh mandate
for another 3-year term of public service.

In a survey conducted by an independent research group towards the homestretch of the campaign, 75 percent of the 1,500 representative voters in all barangays of Sta. Barbara favor Velasco while 20 percent said they will vote for former Mayor Carlito Zaplan who is making a comeback bid.

The remaining five per cent is still undecided.

Velasco, a director of the Philippine National Police, campaigned on the strength of his administration’s performance which has been tagged as a “champion in public service.”

His program included the construction of 288 classrooms, a housing village for the poor, hundreds of millions of pesos worth of flood control dikes, bridges and roads, and irrigation facilities.

In partnership with the private sector, he also initiated livelihood projects.

If re-elected, Velasco plans to expand his livelihood and job creation programs, further modern farming and build an economic zone complex.–LM
