Mayor Al gracious in defeat
AFTER almost four decades in public service, Dagupan Mayor Al Fernandez has graciously accepted his defeat in the 2010 polls, his first loss in an election.
Despite his loss in the last election, Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. thanked God, his family and his wife Mina who tirelessly helped him in the campaign and in guarding the polls, all volunteers, and all those who stood with him and believed in his leadership up to the end.
Fernandez, who lost his re-election bid in the May 10 polls to comebacking Mayor Benjamin Lim, also congratulated the city’s incoming chief.
He first ran for public office in 1971 when he topped the council race in Dagupan City. He left the city briefly during the martial law years, but came back in 1987 when he was elected vice mayor, then mayor in 1992 up to 2001.
He served as undersecretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government and immigration commissioner under the administration of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
He resigned as immigration commissioner in 2007 to run again for mayor of Dagupan and won against the son of then Mayor Lim.
Despite his loss, Fernandez promised Dagupenos that he will continue to actively help in the development of the city.
“Hindi ko po kayo iiwan sa laban na ito”, he said.—LM
