Five AFP, police generals lose political battle

LINGAYEN–Majority of the retired police and military generals who joined the political battlefront in the May 10 elections appear headed for defeat.

Based on the COMELEC’s final tally, those who were proclaimed were re-electionist Governor Amado Espino Jr. a retired police colonel; former Police Director Leopoldo Bataoil who ran as congressional representative for the 2nd District; former police director Silverio Alarcio as mayor of Laoac, and re-electionist Mayor Marcelo Navarro Jr., also a retired police general, from Bani town.

Espino, a member of Philippine Military Academy Class 1972, piled up an insurmountable lead against Rep. Victor Agbayani to win a second term of office

Bataoil got 59,343 votes against his closest pursuers Maria Blanca Kim Lokin’s 27,918; and Arthel B. Caronongan’s 25,626.

Navarro won his second term as Bani mayor with 10,360 votes against Hannibal Olores who amassed 8,118.

Meanwhile, in Rosales, Mayor Ricardo Revita, a retired police chief inspector, garnered 12,925 votes to nose out a new former Mayor Remegio Yu who had only 9,128 votes.

LOSERS

Among the retired generals who lost was former Armed Forces Chief of Staff Hermogenes Esperon Jr. who bowed to Vice Governor Marlyn Primicias Agabas in the congressional race in the 6th District.

Agabas garnered 92,790 votes against Esperon’s 66,495 votes.

In Sta. Barbara town, Mayor Reynaldo Velasco of Sta. Barbara, a retired police deputy director general and member of PMA Class 1971, lost to come-backing Mayor Carlito Zaplan.

Police Director Silverio Alarcio Jr., a classmate of Bataoil, won his bid for the mayorship of Laoac.

However, another Bataoil classmate, Police Director Ismael Rafanan lost by a wide margin against Libradita Abrenica, wife of Villasis Mayor Nonato Abrenica.

Latest figures released by KBP showed Rafanan piling up 7,297 against Abrenica’s 15,528 votes.

Another big loser was retired Vice Philippine Navy Admiral Virgilio Marcelo who lost his bid for the mayorship of San Manuel against Vice Mayor Alain Jerico Perez, son of incumbent Mayor Salvador Perez

Marcelo trailed the young Perez with a vote of 4,727 against the latter’s 8,406 votes.

Retired Commodore Julito Casilla II placed only third in the race for mayor of San Carlos City which was won by a landslide by incumbent Mayor Julier Resuello who had 40,097 while former 3rd District Congressman Leopoldo Tulagan placed second place with 14,499.–LM
