Ex-Gov. Colet backs Espino
LINGAYEN–Governor Amado Espino Jr. received further boost for his re-election bid with the unexpected and unprecedented endorsement from former Governor Rafael Colet.
Colet, who served as governor from 1986 to 1992, announced his support for Espino just days before the May 10 election.
Colet, currently president of the Pangasinan People Power Movement (PPPM) which is campaigning for Liberal Party standard bearer Benigno Aquino III, said Espino is a far better candidate than his lone rival Second District Congressman Victor Agbayani, a three-term governor who is making a comeback bid for the position.
Colet explained that while PPPM’s initial concentration was supporting candidates for national positions, the group also wants to put forward “just endorsement” for local posts.
Colet also endorsed the candidacy of Jose Ferdinand Calimlim, Espino’s running mate, for Vice Governor even as Espino and Calimlim are both under the administration’s Lakas-Kampi-CMD.
Colet said he was first impressed with Espino for his active role in the emergency operations during a calamity last year.
“I haven’t seen nor talked to Governor Espino but when I saw him on TV during the outrage of typhoon Pepeng ang sabi ko mukhang okay ito,” said Colet.
Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan later invited Colet to visit the Capitol, which was renovated under Espino’s term.
“And so I met with Governor Espino for the first time. I saw the Capitol and I saw how beautiful it is now,” Colet said, stressing that it is not just the building that is remarkable but the whole capitol grounds.
“What should not escape every Pangasinense,” Colet said, “is that the Provincial Capitol is a personification of the people in Pangasinan.”
Colet also commended Espino for the rehabilitation of the old Sison Auditorium, once the center of performing arts in pre-war Pangasinan, and the Asingan Community Hospital in his hometown.
The PPPM, founded by Colet, is a non-partisan volunteer movement intended to support and campaign for candidates who can bring drastic reforms for the country through leadership that is based on honesty, sincerity and integrity.—LM
