‘Manay’ prevails over ‘Manang’
LINGAYEN–Georgina “Manay Gina” de Venecia is the new congressional representative for the 4th District of Pangasinan, the first woman ever to hold the post.
De Venecia was proclaimed in the presence of her husband, the incumbent 4th District Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr.
“I am humbled by the massive support and love of the people of the 4th District of Pangasinan,” Manay Gina said in an interview shortly after her proclamation.
She also said that her victory as the first woman representative for the district indicates how women are now empowered.
“I am happy because women supported me throughout,” she said, adding that with their support, she will help empower the women sector more through livelihood projects.
Manay Gina was proclaimed by the Provincial Board of Canvassers here at 10 p.m. Wednesday, even before the results in San Fabian town came in.
At that time, Manay Gina already garnered 104,976 votes against the 54,382 votes of her opponent Celia Lim, also known during the campaign as “Manang Celia”. The 50,615 difference was higher than the 42,586 registered voters in San Fabian.
The final count for the district by the Provincial Board of Canvassers gave De Venecia a total of 128,198 against Lim’s 64,017.
SAD FOR AL
Meanwhile, Manay Gina also expressed sadness over the defeat of re-electionist Dagupan Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. who lost to former Mayor Benjamin Lim, husband of Celia.
Manay Gina, Fernandez and winning re-electionist Dagupan Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez campaigned together under the GAB team banner.
However, she said Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez and she will “try our best to work with the new leader of Dagupan City so the future of Dagupan and the entire Fourth District of Pangasinan will be better,” she said.—LM
