Tax evaders under close watch

SEVERAL business establishments in Pangasinan are currently being closely monitored by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for failure to pay the right amount of taxes.

BIR Regional Director Tomas Rosales said warning notices have already been issued to the owners of these businesses and he urged them to act on these to avoid stiff sanctions such as the closure of their shops under the Oplan Kandado campaign.

Maraming kandidato na naman dito sa Region 1 para sa Oplan Kandado. Sana magbayad na sila at hindi na umabot pa sa ganong punto,” he said.

Last year, several restaurants and drugstores were padlocked campaign as the owners failed to pay the right amount of taxes by under-declaring their sales or not issuing receipts or invoices.

Rosales said their intensified tax collection efforts are continuing, noting that the BIR Region 1 office emerged as the 3rd best in the country last year in terms of performance.

With a 15 percent higher tax collection goal this year, Rosales said his office will work harder to achieve this.

He said the collection in the first quarter this year is about eight percent higher than the same period last year.

Meanwhile, Revenue District No. 4 head Yolanda Ferrer said the BIR office based in Calasiao was also given a quota of P1.4 billion this year.

Medyo malaki nga yong binigay sa amin compared last year, kaya doblehin pa namin ang aming tax collection efforts,” she said.

In a related development, lawyer Beverly Melo, head of the assessment section at the regional office, urged taxpayers who have complaints or concerns to contact their nearest BIR office.
