LITTLE known cyclist Oscar Rendole from Nueva Ecija carried out a tactical ride through the flatlands then poured out his remaining energy on the mountain climbs to outclass all the top guns in the 2nd ‘OO na, Noynoy na’ bikefest.

The 25-year old champion, who pocketed a P23,000 top prize, floated with some unheralded riders in the second pack most of the way and engineered a burst of speed at the steep zigzaging ascend through Kennon road.

He caught up with and overtook the race favorites eight kilometers from the finish line and never looked back.

He clocked the 224 kilometers lung-busting trek from Tarlac City to Baguio City via the northern areas of Nueva Ecija and eastern towns of Pangasinan in six hours, 29 minutes and 18 seconds.

Rendole, from Guimba town, was a mere survivor during the March 23 first edition of the race held in Subic-Dagupan.

Meanwhile, the promising newly-turned pro Daniel Asto from Tarlac also gave the cycling giants a run for their money by finishing second, 59 seconds behind Rendole, bagging the P17,000 prize.

Pozorrubio pride and 2003 Tour Pilipinas champion Arnel Quirimit landed third, one minute two seconds behind, winning P11,000.

Mapandan son-in-law Irish Valenzuela and Paniqui, Tarlac-born Joseph Millanes placed fourth and fifth, taking P7,000 and P5,000, respectively.

Rounding up the top ten were: Mark Guevara, Renier Clauna, Santy Barnachea, Reynaldo Navarro, and Joel Calderon.

The prizes were awarded by Jun Omar Ebdane, chairman of the Asahan Mo party-list that sponsored the event. He was assisted by race project director Jun Velasco and his wife, Baguio City mediamen Nars Padilla and Primo Agatep who were the finish line coordinators.–JAGJr.
