There were three employees inside the pawnshop at the time.

Police Inspector Gerardo Macaraeg, explosive ordnance technician of the Dagupan City Police, said the grenade malfunctioned, indicating that the suspect may not be familiar with handling grenades.

One of the pawnshop employees immediately noticed the grenade and was able to alert other employees to get out and called the police.

When the police, led by Superintendent Mariano Luis Verzosa, city police chief, arrived, they confirmed that the object was a real a grenade and the area was quickly cleared and cordoned off while the grenade was being disabled.
